Auto Paint Matching Following a Car Collision

Posted on August 8, 2014

A car collision can leave your car with unsightly damage that requires expert body work to be restored. Once the dents are repaired, the challenge is to find, mix, and blend the right paint to achieve a perfect color match. If you were recently in a car collision, read on to learn how auto paint matching works.

Professional car painting.

The Elements of Paint
Automotive paint consists of three primary components: resin, solvent, and pigment. Resin determines the quality and durability of the paint and its application. Solvent creates the viscosity of the paint so that it can be applied effectively. And pigment is a powder consisting of toners or colors that combine to produce the finish.

Find the Color Code and Order the Paint
The original paint on your car was assigned a color code by the manufacturer. With your car’s model number and model year, an insurance approved collision repair shop can find your car’s color code online. In some cases it can be difficult to find an older car’s color code online; in this case, the collision repair shop will find it on the car’s identification plate. Once the car collision shop has determined your vehicle’s color code, they will order the paint. Sometimes this requires ordering several tones or paint colors.

Paint Mixing
The paint experts at the collision repair shop will need to mix together the paint until the exact color is produced. A good collision repair shop will always blend the color to achieve a perfect match. This is especially important if your vehicle is getting spot paint treatment, because even a small paint touch up gone wrong can stand out and reduce the value of your vehicle.

Pulling Dents Out of a Damaged Car

Posted on July 31, 2014

There are two primary ways to remove car dents. The old-school way is to screw a dent puller into the side of the vehicle’s panel, and then pull it in and out to remove the dent. This typically leaves small holes in the side of the panel, which can cause corrosion over time. A better way to repair dents is to perform metal shaping, where a technician uses a stud welder to pull the dent out and shape the panel. After a car collision it can be hard to deal with insurance companies and auto repair shops. Read this article to make sense of your auto repair options after a car accident.

Man And Woman Having Argument After Traffic Accident

Negligence and Insurance
To collect any type of damages from another driver or his insurer, you must prove that the other driver was negligent. If the other driver is at fault, his auto insurance policy will only pay up to its limit, even if that limit does not cover all of your damage costs.

When Repairs Exceed the Value of the Car
A car insurance company is only required to pay your car’s damages up to the value of the car. If your car’s repair costs are greater than the value of your car, the insurer will declare it a total loss. In this case, the insurer will take your car and give you the fair market value for it.

Using Your Policy’s Coverage
If you have collision coverage, you may be able to be reimbursed for the collision repairs through your own policy. This is usually the best option if the other driver did not have enough insurance to cover your damages or if you were at fault in the accident.

Making a Claim
After you make a claim, an insurer will be sent out to inspect your car, or you will be asked to drive the car to an inspection station. Though the insurer may recommend a mechanic, it is oftentimes better to use a collision repair shop of your choice instead.

How to Document Car Accident Damage

Posted on June 29, 2014

Two Drivers Arguing After Traffic Accident

Most times it’s easy to tell which driver is at fault for an auto accident, but sometimes it isn’t. To better your chances of obtaining just compensation from your auto insurance company, it’s important that you obtain as much evidence as possible immediately following an accident and before you take your car to a collision repair shop. Documentation may even help you win a lawsuit if you are injured or require additional compensation following a car wreck. To help, here are some tips for documenting car accident damage.

Write Down What You Remember
If nobody was seriously injured, take a few moments immediately after the collision and write down everything you remember pertaining to the crash. Be sure to include how fast you were going, the direction you were traveling, road conditions at the time of the accident, traffic signals, and anything else that can help you preserve accuracy should the case go to court.

Take Lots of Pictures
A picture is worth a thousand words, but it might be worth more than a thousand bucks. Insurance companies do everything in their power to minimize your settlement to cover damage sustained to you, your vehicle, and your passengers. The best way to counter their efforts to minimize your insurance settlement is with pictures. If you don’t have a camera in the car, use your smartphone or tablet. Document the damage to your car, any other vehicles involved in the collision, and important road conditions and traffic signals that may have caused the accident in the first place.

If you want to restore your car back to its original condition, bring it to B&L Automotive Repairs, Inc. We are a full-service, insurance-approved collision repair shop serving the greater Chicago area. Our car collision technicians are ASE and I-CAR Gold Class certified.
