The Potawatomi, Miami, and other peoples lived what is now the Chicago area for centuries before the first non-native settlers arrived in the 18 th century. Chicago was founded in 1833, and the population grew considerably after the completion of the Chicago Portage, which opened up a waterway between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River. The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 took out a large portion of the city, but Chicago rose from the ashes to become one of the world's greatest cities.
Today, more than 2.7 million people live in Chicago, making it the third largest city in the country. Chicago continues to be a major center of commerce thanks to its position between Lake Michigan and the Mississippi River, its large network of railways and highways, and its enormous airport. The O'Hare International Airport is considered the busiest airport in the world.
